First thing you have to do is to hire two characters. Once you get back to the restaurant you have to assign jobs to them. Just make one of them a waiter and the other one a cook. And then you're done with the initial set up.
Next click on the chair at the bottom of the screen to redecorate your restaurant and rearrange the tables like this. The reason why is to minimize the distance between the cook, the waiter and the tables so you can save time and serve as many customers as you can.
You start with 2000 bucks. You should to get three more tables right away. And that it's going to level you up so that you can hire one more employee. Once you hire a new employee and get three more chairs for the restaurants that will make you level you up again. Now you should be at level 3. Back at the restaurant click over to decorate and purchased another stove and make the third employee also a Cook.
You can only have one customer per table. So you might as well have only one chair per table to save up on costs. Once the restaurant is all set up and running click on the mailbox. You will find quiz of the day. you will have 10 seconds to answer it. Answer it correctly to get a new ingredient.

Next you should visit your friends' restaurants. I would not recommend you to revamp the outside of your restaurant at the moment in order to save money for more important functional things.
Make sure you visit all your friends once a day, every time you go into a friends' restaurant you'll receive a new ingredient.
Keep an eye on the happiness level of your employees. Try not to work them below 80% happiness. Otherwise, their productivity will suffer, customers may start to complain.
Once they fall below 80% click on redecorate and barricade the door with the mailbox. Click on the employees and make them rest. it should take about 12 minutes for them to fully recover from 80% to 100%.
Meanwhile, you might want to start working on your menu. Click on Change Menu icon. The trick to gain experience faster is to level up your dishes, the higher the level of the dish, higher the experience you will receive from serving it. It is better to focus on only one dish from each category. Trade ingredients for other dishes with your friends.
Once your employees are all rested reassign their jobs, two cooks one waiter, and un-barricade the door.
